Treble Advances to Quarterfinal...

Houston, Sunday:

No. 4 qualifier Craig Treble advanced to the quarterfinal round today at the 23rd annual NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park before losing to Matt Smith.

Treble handily defeated Mike Berry in the opening stanza with a 6.885-second elapsed time at 193.02 mph to Berry's 7.034/189.46, then met up with Smith in the next round. In an uncharacteristic move, Treble fouled out at the starting lights with a -.068 reaction time (.000 is perfect), handing the win to Smith.

Despite the red light (Smith recorded a .008 reaction time), Smith's 7.004/188.75 would have defeated Treble's 7.048/186.10.

"That was just a double negative," said Treble, who leaves Houston sixth in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Pro Stock Motorcycle standings. "The Valvoline Motorcycle Oils Suzuki fell way off and I did something ridiculously stupid on the tree. I don't know why I went -.68 red because I was double-o and teen, nothing but, in qualifying. In the first round, I was a little nervous about red-lighting so I squeezed real hard on the clutch lever and came up with a .072, but it was weird.

"I know when I was staging the bike against Matt I flickered the bulb a little bit and I bumped it in just a little bit extra to make sure I was in, but not -.68 red.

"That was just a weird deal. I red-lit, I screwed up, I'll take the heat this time.

"However, I'm tickled with the performance of the Suzuki. It's finally coming around and Steve is getting a great handle on this bike. It's 60-footin', it's easy to ride and it's really ripping to 330 feet. So that's what we were seriously focused on, trying to get this bike to get a hold of the track. It's starting to show in the ET.”
